 I have 7 years of experience as a Professional Genealogist.  I have conducted various research projects for clients in which I have researched online and in onsite libraries, regional archives and university archives for client’s family history requests.

I have provided social, county history and boundary evolution information in the context of the client’s research question as well as specific primary and secondary information on specific ancestors with appropriate source citations.  

I use online paid databases such as Ancestry, Find My Past and Genealogy Bank as well as various internet resources.   I am a member of the Association for Professional Genealogists, New England Genealogical Historical Society, Ohio Genealogical Society (Ashland County and Hancock County chapters)   My research specialty localities include Virginia, Arizona, California, Wisconsin, Ohio and Pennsylvania.  

I have also tutored clients in Roots Magic software and conducted data entry for them using this genealogy database.  I have formulated client queries for online genealogy groups.

In accordance with the Association for Professional Genealogists annual education requirement: I have attended Jamboree (Southern California Genealogical Society), Ohio Genealogical Conferences conference and currently have a subscription to Legacy Family Tree Webinars.  

 I am currently studying Genetic Genealogy.  I have used Microsoft Word to create status reports for clients and project reports.

  

I have prepared clients for library research trips to the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah. 

 I have conducted short research projects like locating client requested obituaries, Family Bible and photographic identification.

I am watching Rootstech 2018 streaming this week and updating the North San Diego Genealogical Society Facebook page. Next month our society will celebrate our 50th anniversary with a luncheon.

The last few years have been rough, caregiving for a sick loved one.  I hope to do a better job at blog posting this year.  I am thrilled to have two genealogy research clients this year and look forward to diving deeper into their family histories.  I have recently returned to my duties as Social Media Chair for the North San Diego County Genealogical Society (NSDCGS). 

Did you ever consider the occupations run in your family?

I have several doctors in my family as well as musicians, writers and railroad workers.

My parents were both teachers. My father was a university Dean and professor and my mom
taught elementary school.  I am a teacher of sorts. I teach people about their family histories and I teach paper crafting classes. So in my own way I am carrying on the legacy left to me by my parents.  Also, both of my parents enjoyed learning about history like I do.

Both my family and my husband's family have a history of working for the railroad.  My branch was working on the Chicago Northwest Railroad and my husbands grandfather was a Blacksmith's assistant for the railroad in Sacramento, California.

Storytelling also runs strong in my family.  One of my grandparents was a vaudeville drummer and had stories about the Marx Brothers and Buster Keaton coming for dinner.  Ole Dahlberg was reported to be able to roll his hat down his arm in the grand vaudeville tradition. Ole told of a young Benny K. who played with him for a while in the Orchestra at Waukegan, Illinois. Benny K. later became Jack Benny.

My grandparents Alice Dahlberg and Thomas Riddell Sankey worked at the Racine Journal Times (Racine Times Call) So they made a living with storytelling and telling the stories of others as Journalists.

Busy Summer! Jamboree in June

I went to Jamboree in June. It did not seem to be as crowded as in past years.  I bought a paper copy of the syllabus but then I had to carry it! I was a hefty lug.
Some of the topics this year were:
Genealogy Cloud, WIKIs for Genealogy, Upstate NY Midwest, Flipboard, Wills and Estates, Navy/Marines, Google Search Strategies, Widows/Orphans, Low German Mennonite, Treasury Records, Eastern Europe, African American Genealogy, Writing, Manuscript Collections, DAR website, Colonial Migration, Land Records, Google Earth, Scottish Military, Copyright, Weather (and your ancestor), Goldrush, Mexico and Early Ohio.  This is not an exhaustive list but it gives you an idea of the topics.  Jamboree is usually held the first weekend of June. This year there was a separate DNA conference that preceded Jamboree.

Note John Ward is the father of Edward Ward my direct ancestor.

How does George (1) Ward of Tygert Valley, Randolph County, West Virginia fit into my line of descent?

A Tragic account from: The Kinnan Massacre. West Virginia History: George Ward of Tygert Valley died before his wife Mary Ward.  As a young widow Mary Ward went to live with a friend named Mary Kinnan (nee Lewis) and her husband and children.  Mary had three children of her own, two boys George (2) and David  and one girl; The child of Mary Ward's named Mary was killed by Shawnee.  Also, during an evening raid by the Shawnee, David was scalped but survived and George who was an infant was slipped out of a window by his mother.   Mary ran to get help from a neighbor: John Hamilton. He sounded the alarm and help did not come soon enough and the Shawnee took Mary Kinnan captive for four years.

This tragic account led me to look for the grandfather Israel Ward in Gloucester, New Jersey.  Apparently, Mary returned to New Jersey with her sons and David bore a scar on his forehead as evidence of the Shawnee raid.

The question I have is who was George (1) Ward's father?  A working hypothesis is that his father was Edward Ward son of  John (1) Ward because of a Military Pension file I found on Fold3.com

I will keep looking and see if I can resolve this quandary.
